European Sustainable Development Week

Palacký University will step into the new semester in a sustainable way - respectful of the environment, resources and people around us. From 23 to 27 September 2024, it will join the European Sustainable Development Week, during which it will hold a bazaar and exchange of items, clothes or books, a car-free day or several workshops. The offer of meat-free meals in the university canteens will also be expanded. All those who study or work at UP can actively participate in Sustainability Week.

24/9 | UP Swap at MEET UP festival

12:00–18:00 | Bedřicha Václavka dormitories

Don't buy, trade! Get your home in order before the semester starts and bring us clothes, books and study materials and household items that you no longer use but are still functional and undamaged. You can save someone else a trip to the store and money. Then, during MEET UP, come to the Envelopa campus in front of the Bedřich Václavek dorm to pick up and drop off what you need.

We will be collecting items on Monday, September 16 and Thursday, September 19, 8:00-10:00 am and 1:00-3:00 pm at the Student Club in the Zbrojnice/Armoury.

You can also bring them on the day itself or you can contact Mirka Zavadil from the Sustainable University (miroslava.zavadil@upol.cz) and arrange to drop them off at another time at the UP Rector's Office.

The UP Swap is part of the MEET UP programme (meetup.upol.cz) and is held in cooperation with the Technical Services of the City of Olomouc and Charity. The event will also include a tasting of university beer Eureka.

24–26/9 | Workshops

To participate in the workshops, book your place at rezervace.upol.cz/etur2024.

Mindfulness

Tue 24. 9. | 10:00–12:00 | Students club at Zbrojnice/Armoury (Biskupské nám. 1)

In this one-day workshop, we will focus on a taste of basic mindfulness techniques such as breath meditation or body-centered meditation. In the second part, we will look at cultivating kindness to self/self and others, and why kindness and compassion are such important aspects that support the development of strong, quality relationships and life satisfaction.
Bring a cushion, comfortable clothes, a notepad with a pencil for any notes, and a water bottle.

Non-toxic household

Wed 25. 9. | 15:00–17:00 | Faculty of Arts Main Building (Křížkovského 10)

We spend a large part of our lives in our homes. Do we realise how much the daily products we use to care for our homes affect our health and well-being? Cleaners, laundry and dishwashing detergents... what you probably don't know and should know if you want to live a healthier life and care for the health of the planet at the same time.

Caring for houseplants

Wed 25. 9. | 15:00–16:30 | terrace at Envelopa Hub (17. listopadu 1230/8a)

Nowadays, caring for plants is not only a matter of aesthetics, but also of sustainability and environmental responsibility. It often happens that our plants end their lives too soon due to inadequate care or unsuitable conditions. This workshop will focus on practical tips and tricks on how to properly care for plants, how to place them appropriately in a space and how to recognize and deal with problems such as underwatering, overwatering or pest infestation. Participants will learn the proper procedures for cutting, repotting and pruning plants to extend the life of their green companions. Come get inspired and gain new knowledge to help you become true green saviors!

Brewing beer in the experimental brewery Eureka

Thu 26. 9. | 18:00 | Faculty of Science main building (17. listopadu 12, katedra analytické chemie)

Beer is a complex beverage that can be studied from the primary raw materials, through the production process to the final product, which has social, historical, health and spiritual impacts. At Palacký University it is possible to find experts in all these fields. The Eureka University Brewery serves as a platform for interdisciplinary and inter-faculty collaboration within the university.

25/9 | International Car Free Day at UP

International Car Free Day is an opportunity to draw attention to the ever-growing problem of air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and noise caused by car traffic. It is a day to show that there are other ways to get around town. Walking, cycling or using public transport has many positive impacts on our health and the environment. Fewer cars on the streets means cleaner air, less noise and more space for people. Join Sustainable University and try a different mode of transport today!
