European Sustainable Development Week
Sustainably and responsibly – towards the environment, resources, and people around us – Palacký University is entering the new semester. It will join the European Sustainable Development Week and offer students, staff, and the public a varied program of activities. Come and try shared mobility, find out how to improve your lifestyle, and actively engage with the university community.
This year’s European Sustainable Development Week at UP will start with a Car-Free Day. At the same time, this is part of another campaign – the European Mobility Week (16–22 September). From 22 September until 5 October, further activities will follow, organized by Sustainable University in cooperation with UP faculties and their sustainable development ambassadors and other partners.
22 September | International Car-Free Day at UP and in Olomouc
International Car-Free Day is an opportunity to draw attention to the ever-growing problem of air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and noise caused by car traffic. It is a day when we can show together that there are other ways to get around the city. Walking, cycling or using public transport has a number of positive effects on both our health and the environment. Fewer cars on the streets mean cleaner air, less noise and more space for people. Join Sustainable University and try a different mode of transport today!
This year’s Car-Free Day will take place in the morning at the Armoury and by the main building of the Faculty of Science in the Envelopa campus (17. listopadu 12). In the afternoon, the university activities will be followed by a programme at náměstí Republiky, organised by the City of Olomouc with the support of Sustainable University.
Ride the tram for free
In cooperation with DPMO and the City of Olomouc, a tram marked Car-Free Day will operate from 6:00 to 19:00. It will be free for all passengers and will run on the following loop: Main Railway Station – city centre – Tržnice – Main Railway Station.

24 September | Screening of the film Carbon: The Unauthorised Biography
19:00 | Film Hall at Konvikt (Univerzitní 3)
Carbon footprint. Carbon neutrality. Carbon emissions. There is no escaping carbon: the media confront us with it from all sides, and it tends to evoke primarily negative associations. But this was not always the case. After all, we owe our very existence to carbon. In this documentary, carbon becomes the protagonist of a dynamic story of creation and destruction, with all of us playing supporting roles. Narrated by Sarah Snook and featuring commentary from scientists, carbon guides us through the story of its existence, from its birth in the core of an exploding star to the prospects for the near future of life on Earth. In doing so, it helps us understand its ambiguous role: just as easily as it gave us life, it can take it away again. Our future, however, depends not so much on carbon itself as on how we choose to use it and live with it.
