The Ten Commandments of Sustainable and Responsible Behavior

The environment at Palacký University Olomouc is something we all create together. But what can we do to make sure we feel good here and avoid negative impacts on those around us, the environment, and the future? Several simple tips and recommendations can help—summarized in the form of a “Decalogue” for sustainability, social responsibility, equality, and cyber security.

Prevent waste creation. Try to reuse items and find new uses for them. Carry a fabric bag, your own water bottle, and a reusable cup. If something breaks, try to repair it before replacing it with something new. Sort your waste carefully.

Use office supplies and paper sparingly and only print what is necessary. Take advantage of electronic communication and forms.

Buy only what is truly needed. Prioritize quality over quantity. If you can no longer use something, try to offer it to others.

Do not waste water, heat, or electricity. Don’t leave lights on unnecessarily. Switch computers, printers, and copiers to energy-saving modes or turn them off. During the heating season, ventilate rooms intensively but briefly. When leaving a room, your workplace, or home for a longer period, check to make sure the lights are off and windows are closed.

Use environmentally friendly forms of transportation when possible. Prefer train, bus, public transport, bicycle, or walking. Try not to travel alone by car. Use airplanes only when absolutely necessary.

Don’t waste food. Don’t be afraid to ask for a smaller portion in the canteen or at a restaurant. Bring your own container to take uneaten food home.

Treat the environment and the people around you considerately. Reflect on how your behavior impacts others and your surroundings.

Strive for a tolerant and open environment. Respect others and actively stand up against discrimination, bullying, and violation of rights.

Follow cyber security rules. Use strong passwords, updated software, and antivirus protection. Try to spot phishing and do not respond to emails asking for your password.
