European Sustainable Development Week

Sustainably and responsibly – towards the environment, resources, and people around us – Palacký University is entering the new semester. It will join the European Sustainable Development Week and offer students, staff, and the public a varied program of activities. Come and try shared mobility, find out how to improve your lifestyle, and actively engage with the university community.

This year’s European Sustainable Development Week at UP will start with a Car-Free Day. At the same time, this is part of another campaign – the European Mobility Week (16–22 September). From 22 September until 3 October, further activities will follow, organized by Sustainable University in cooperation with UP faculties and their sustainable development ambassadors and other partners.

22 September | International Car-Free Day at UP and in Olomouc

The International Car-Free Day is an opportunity to highlight the increasingly serious problems of air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and noise caused by road traffic. It is a day when we can show that there are other ways to move around the city. Walking, cycling, or using public transport brings many benefits to our health and the environment. Fewer cars in the streets mean cleaner air, less noise, and more space for people. Join Sustainable University and try a different way of getting around today!

This year’s Car-Free Day will take place during the morning at Zbrojnice and at the main building of the Faculty of Science at Envelopa (17. listopadu 12). The afternoon program will continue at Republic Square, organized by the City of Olomouc with the support of Sustainable University.

26 September | Clothes Swap & Upcycling Workshop

5:00–11:00 p.m. | Sts Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology

Do you have clothes at home that you no longer wear? Bring them along, swap them for something new, and help protect the wealth of our natural environment. Even if you don’t have any items to exchange, come anyway—you might still find your new favourite piece.

Student Lucie Guthová sews and creates from second-hand clothes and fabrics. Each of her pieces is unique and carries its own story. True wealth lies in nature, and this is one way to protect it. Clothes that have lost their purpose gain a new life and find new owners through her work. In the workshop, Lucie will focus on recycling old and used cardboard. Using needle and thread, both adults and children will have the chance to create a small embroidered picture.

The swap and workshop are organized by the Sts Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology, Palacký University and are part of the European Researchers’ Night (Noc vědců) programme.
